While there is currently no cure for bipolar disorder, many patients can manage their symptoms with proper treatment. A psychiatrist will guide the patient’s treatment through a healthcare team that could include psychologists, social workers, and psychiatric nurses.
Primary treatments for bipolar disorder include medications; individual, group, or family psychological counseling (psychotherapy); or education and support groups.
As a patient, you may need to begin taking medications right away. Once symptoms are under control, work with your doctor and psychotherapist to find the best long-term treatment.2
Depakote can harm your unborn baby. All women of childbearing age should talk to their healthcare provider about using other possible treatments instead of Depakote. If the decision is made to use Depakote, you should use effective birth control (contraception).
Medications1are used as a treatment for bipolar disorder. In some cases, doctors may prescribe more than one type of medication to manage the condition. It is important to take medications as prescribed and to discuss any questions with your doctor. |
|
Psychotherapy,1,2or “talk” therapy, can be an effective part of the treatment for bipolar disorder. Though there are several different forms of psychotherapy, the goal of each is to provide support, education, and guidance to patients and their families. |
|
Hospitalization2may sometimes be necessary for some patients. This can include options such as partial hospitalization or day treatment programs. Hospital programs provide support and counseling while getting symptoms under control. |

See Additional Resources and Links for more sources of information and support. Talk to your doctor about your periodic shifts in mood from high to low. Your doctor knows you and your medical history and can safely guide you toward making informed decisions about possible treatment. |
