A person is considered to have epilepsy when they have two or more seizures for unknown reasons.1 Sometimes called a “seizure disorder,” epilepsy affects the brain and makes a person susceptible to seizures—a sudden surge of electrical activity in the brain that affects how a person appears or acts for a short time.

Once someone has been diagnosed with epilepsy, it is important for them to begin treatment as soon as possible and to stay in regular contact with their doctor. In some cases, a patient may not respond to medications and will continue to have regular seizures despite taking their medications as prescribed. For these patients, a doctor may suggest other seizure treatments, which could be: surgery, a special diet, vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), or a combination of any of these therapies.3
About 50% of people will be seizure free using their first medicine4
Almost 70% of people with epilepsy will have their seizures controlled by medicine4
Talk to your doctor if you suspect you have a seizure disorder. Your doctor knows you and your medical history and can safely guide you toward making informed decisions about the condition and possible treatment.
